The perfume market can be a difficult one to negotiate – so many fragrances with so many different ingredients! Wouldn’t life be simpler if you could search for your favourite fruit or flower and discover perfumes that contain these scents?
This is what plenty of people in Australia have been doing. So, to save you time and effort, we have compiled this guide to the most searched perfume scents, putting all the research in one place and making it easy for you to find the perfect perfume to suit your tastes.
Coconut is a perennially popular fragrance – it smells like summer and conjures up images of relaxing on the beach. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people are looking for women’s perfumes that contain strong coconut overtones.
Some of our favourites include:
This is a soft yet enticing perfume, perfect for those summer evenings. It contains just the right amount of coconut without this tone becoming overpowering – it’s perfectly balanced with gentle fragrances of rose and bergamot on a warm base of vanilla and honey. A zesty twist is provided by a hint of mandarin orange.
Exotic and intoxicating, Crystal Noir offers all the glamour you can expect from the Versace label. The coconut provides a light touch, enhanced by head tones of sweet peony and refreshing orange blossom. The fragrance rests on a woody base of gardenia and sandalwood, providing the perfect element of mystery.
Like all Dior perfumes, Hypnotic Poison is a complex and intriguing blend. The clear coconut top notes are complemented with plum and apricot, mixing exotically with a heart of lily of the valley, rose, and jasmine. The base of sandalwood, vanilla, and musk gives this summer fragrance a truly oriental feel.
It’s easy to assume celebrity perfumes are all children’s fragrances, but Thank U, Next offers an optimistic, summer feel perfect for today’s young woman. Coconut is the main ingredient here, blending gently with pear, raspberry, and rose, to create a light, fresh daytime scent.
Inspired by the waters of the Caribbean, this unisex scent works equally well for men and women. The sweet coconut is counterbalanced with citrus tones, given warmth by a heart of hibiscus, jasmine, and ginger. This relaxing concoction rests on an exotic bed of musk, sugar, and white rum.
Incense is an exotic, heady scent which many people want to recreate in a perfume. Equally, this is a scent that also works extremely well in men’s colognes.
We’ve decided on a few of our favourite incense-inspired fragrances to share with you.
Designed as an “ode to incense,” Sahara Noir is influenced by Middle Eastern culture. Luxurious, exotic, and feminine, it blends top notes of orange and cypress with a heart of Frankincense, cinnamon, and rose. The base of amber, cedar, benzoin, and vanilla completes this heady, fascinating blend.
This incense-influenced scent is no longer easy to get hold of, but it’s well worth the effort if you can track it down. Spicy and intense, it has a smoky, woody base infused with patchouli, saffron, and pepper. A truly exotic perfume.
A cousin of the perennially popular Obsession from the same stable, Obsessed is an oriental perfume with strong incense overtones. The musk base infuses a heart of white lavender, while the top notes of citrus, elemi, and nevoli essence provide a spicy, smoky feel.
Often compared to incense, Rochas Man combines top notes of bergamot and lavender with a heart of jasmine and lily of the valley. The musk base gives this cologne a deep and exotic essence.
This powerful, dark scent for men instantly conjures up images of Mediaeval churches. It contains strong tones of Frankincense and myrrh, balanced with chamomile and vanilla. Perfect when you want to capture the complexity of incense in a single cologne.
Vanilla is an ingredient that never goes out of style. It forms the heart of many of today’s bestselling perfumes, but sometimes it is so subtle that you can hardly tell it’s there. However, if you’re looking for something more overtly vanilla-scented, we’re happy to help you out.
Here are a few of our favourite fragrances that use vanilla as their main ingredient.
Vanille Exquise is a perfume that truly captures the essence of vanilla, without being overly sweet. It places the vanilla heart on an exotic bed of musk and sandalwood, while adding light top notes of angelica and almond to provide a contrasting bitterness. A fresh scent perfect for spring days.
This unisex fragrance gives the vanilla heart a musky twist. The sweetness of the vanilla is counterbalanced beautifully with elements including coconut, almond, benzoin, and beeswax, on a dark and mysterious base of sandalwood and black liquorice. This is the truly exotic way to wear a scent that uses vanilla at its core.
When it comes to ground-breaking fragrances, few names are more celebrated than Jo Malone. The Vanilla and Anise Cologne is truly unique, using fresh top notes of bergamot, anise, and fennel, which provide a spicy contrast to the vanilla heart. This is a summer scent that presents vanilla in a new and innovative way.
This mysterious, powdery fragrance uses vanilla as part of its base, along with sandalwood for a deeper, darker tone. Patchouli, rose, and iris provide a floral core, with tangy top notes of mandarin orange and pepper. The vanilla shines through this complex scent, holding all the diverse elements together in a beautiful combination.
This was quite a surprising entry in the top scent search results, as it isn’t a fruit or flower – or even an incense – but an actual perfume. Xia Xiang is a women’s fragrance released by Revlon in the 1980s. Exotic and oriental, it created a sensation on its first release and remained popular throughout the early 1990s, although many people could never quite place this mysterious scent.
Xia Xiang contains top notes of citrus and bergamot, drifting into a heart of jasmine, gardenia, rose, lily of the valley, and ylang-ylang. The fragrance is supported on a spicy base of sandalwood, patchouli, chamomile, peach, and plum, resulting in a heady and truly fascinating scent.
Now sadly discontinued, Xia Xiang is highly sought-after online, and original bottles can sell for high prices. Even worse, there are no perfumes which fans say can compare to it. Probably the closest we could recommend would be either Wish by Chopard, which is also fairly difficult to get hold of now, or Hugo Boss Orange Sunset, which has similar spicy tones.
